Snake Killin’

By Lisa Buffaloe

My dad found a small farm house on ten acres during my high school years and promptly moved us to the country. During our first month, he killed twelve poisonous snakes.

While us women-folk were home alone, a Copperhead snake was spotted out front. Being the brave one, I retrieved my dad’s 44 revolver and went out to do battle. The snake didn’t move as I approached.

Standing only a few feet away, I aimed and fired. When the dust cleared, all that remained was a huge hole in the dirt. The snake, amazed at my idiocy or deafened by the boom, didn’t move. My next shot didn’t miss.

My dad became so adept at snake removal, the Blue-jays took notice. They literally flew to him, chirped to get his attention, then would lead him to where a snake was hiding. The snakes didn’t have a chance. By the time my parents relocated, sixty three poisonous snakes had been killed.

Snake killin’ needs to be part of life to remove those insidious, slithering, poisonous thoughts planted by the enemy. You know the ones – they tempt you to do wrong, or think badly about yourself and others, or try to keep everything in a negative filter.

Fortunately, God, our Heavenly Father, provides everything we need. The Message version of 2 Corinthians 10:5 puts it well, “We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.”

Grab the heavenly ammunition, and let’s keep our minds clear and our thoughts pure. There’s snake killin’ to be done!

Heavenly Father, thank You that nothing is too big for You. No nasty snakes or enemy attacks can stand against Your truth, might, and power. Help me never to shy away when there’s snake killin’ to be done.
